For all my engaged couples searching for the perfect encapsulation of elegant, romantic, and timeless photos, look no further than the Desert Botanical Garden in the heart of Phoenix!
It was such a pleasure to photograph Avery and Matthew on this special day. This late afternoon engagement session captured everything we love about spring in the desert! Soft golden light, quiet intentional moments, and a modern sophisticated style to complement the scenery.

Located just minutes from both Downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale, the Desert Botanical Garden spans over 140 acres and showcases thousands of desert plant species native to the Sonoran desert.
The garden has become one of Arizona’s most iconic locations for weddings, engagement sessions, and destination photography. I am always so excited at the opportunity to photograph here!
What makes this location especially beautiful is how much variety a couple can capture within one session:
This session was captured in late March and you see how the spring blooms add beautifully subtle pops of color throughout the trails without overwhelming the desert aesthetic Arizona is known for.
Avery and Matthew complemented each other effortlessly through their entire session.
She wore a beautiful flowing white dress with a statement bow cascading down the back. He kept things timeless with navy trousers and a crisp white button down.
Their session energy was quiet and romantic. We leaned into movement and connection: slow spins along the pathways, forehead touches beneath the towering cacti and my personal favorite, those in-between moments where they simply forgot the camera was there!

One of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions here as a Scottsdale engagement photographer is how there are so many unique backdrops existing within walking distance.
During early spring, soft lavender and seasonal blooms start appearing throughout parts of the garden. This dreamy contrast against the desert landscape makes for beautiful golden hour sessions!
Underrated parts of the garden includes sculptural wooden benches and stone accents that add structure while still keeping the organic desert feel.
Some of the most timeless images actually come from the simplest locations. The winding pathways to the gardens create natural movement that allows for couples to relax into the session with iconic Arizona desert scenery.
Just look how dreamyy these are!

The beautiful part about Arizona is that almost all-year round, the weather is ideal for outdoor photos.
Spring is definitely one of the most popular seasons for engagement photos at the garden though, especially March through early May. Temperatures are comfortable from 70-85°F, the desert blooms start appearing, and the light stays soft and longer into the evening.
For the most flattering lighting, I always recommend scheduling sessions during the last 120 minutes before sunset. This creates:
Weekday evenings are also ideal as they feel quieter and more relaxed compared to the weekends.
Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully in the desert landscape and add softness against cactus textures and stone pathways.
Parking and entrance lines can occasionally take time during peak spring season, especially in April. Expect to pay around $25/person for a ticket into the garden.
There’s quite a bit of walking throughout the garden. Many couples bring a second pair of shoes to change into between locations, especially for those brides-to-be wearing heels.
Neutral tones, whites, creams, navy, black, and earthy colors photograph best against Arizona’s warm desert palette.
Thank you to Avery & Matthew for this dreamy desert opportunity. I always look forward to any session at the Desert Botanical Garden!
As a Scottsdale engagement photographer, my goal is always to create images that feel natural, intentional, and timeless while helping couples feel comfortable every step of the way.
