Your engagement session is such a special milestone. It’s the first time you and your partner are stepping in front of the camera as a soon-to-be married couple, and these photos will capture the excitement, connection, and joy of this season in your lives. One of the questions I get most often from couples is, “What should we wear?” Choosing the right outfits can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be stressful!

Your outfits should complement your surroundings. Are we shooting on a beach, at a park, or downtown surrounded by the city? Neutral tones and flowing fabrics work beautifully in natural landscapes, while bold colors and structured outfits can pop against urban backdrops. Seasonal colors also help your photos feel cohesive like pastels in spring, bright and colorful tones in summer, warm tones in fall, and cozy layers in winter.

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is wearing matching outfits. Instead, aim to coordinate colors and tones. Think about a color palette of 2-3 complementary shades. The goal is to highlight your individuality while showing that you belong together.
Wear clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Fitted pieces tend to photograph well, but avoid anything too tight or restrictive, you want to be able to move naturally and interact with your partner. Textures like lace, knits, or soft linen add such a stunning depth to your images. If you love a pattern, stick to small or subtle ones.
Layers give you options during your session. A jacket, cardigan, or blazer can instantly change the look of your outfit. For my ladies, a flowy dress with a cropped sweater or jacket creates movement and texture. For the guys, layering a button-down with a lightweight jacket or vest adds dimension. Layers also help you adapt if the weather changes or if we want to mix up the vibes of your session!

Shoes are often overlooked but can make a difference in your photos. Choose footwear that fits the location. Heels on sand aren’t usually practical, and sneakers might not match a romantic dress. If you’re unsure, bring a couple of options and we can switch mid-session for variety.
A few weeks before your session, try on your outfits together. Move around, sit down, and make sure everything fits comfortably. Bring a small bag with any touch-up items like lint rollers, hair pins, or makeup for quick fixes. This helps you feel prepared and confident on the day of your session.

Your engagement session is an opportunity to celebrate your love and create timeless photos that you’ll treasure forever. The right outfit is just one piece of the puzzle, but it can make a big difference in how confident you feel and how beautiful your photos turn out!
